Location: New York City / Charlotte / Denver

THE CHALLENGE

This role is a position within the Commercial & Risk Management team where the team’s primary goals are (1) portfolio optimization of all market-driven commodity exposure and (2) long-term contracting of power assets. The Director will support the team’s goals through origination of new offtakes, optimization of the portfolio, and supporting future growth.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Origination of contracting opportunities for renewable fleet, natural gas fleet, and organic development opportunities across the US.

  • Develop important relationships and a network of contacts that are key for revenue contracting opportunities.

  • Leads the analysis of alternative structures and understands impact on relevant debt and tax equity financings.

  • Submission of relevant Requests for Proposals.

  • Manage negotiations of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), tolling agreements, heat rate call options, and other forms of contracted revenue including liaising between cross-functional areas to incorporate relevant input and expertise.

  • Support management of the existing portfolio, including risk management activities.

  • Lead initiatives to optimize revenue of existing assets.

  • Long term strategic planning for combined renewable and thermal asset base.

  • Participate in M&A due diligence, asset onboarding, and transition of offtake relationships and responsibility for newly acquired assets.

  • Support SVP of Commercial & Risk Management in ad-hoc assignments relating to energy trading opportunities, portfolio risk management, M&A activities, and market research.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to travel up to 30%

THE PROFILE TO SUCCEED

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, or Finance, MBA preferred. Experience may substitute for a degree.

  • Experience leading successful hedge negotiations for physical thermal assets in various US regions (battery storage experience a plus).

  • 10+ years’ experience participating in successful commercial negotiations for over 1,000 MW of signed offtakes (swaps, PPAs, or CFDs) with load serving entities, cooperatives, utilities, and/or corporate off-takers.

  • Experience structuring and negotiating natural gas heat rate call options and tolling agreements.

  • Experience with the complex contractual terms and conditions involved in a variety of physical and financial contractual structures for a variety of products (power, Renewable Energy Credits, capacity / Resource Adequacy, environmental products, and Ancillary Services)

  • Experience with standard industry contract forms (ISDA/CSA/EEI)

  • Expertise in wholesale electricity markets in North America including organized and bilateral markets

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Must have strong interpersonal skills to interface with all levels of company personnel and external customers.

  • Self-starter, ability to work well independently and as part of a cross-functional team.

The Onward Energy team is collaborative, dedicated, hard-working, and down to earth. The management team is comprised of seasoned industry professionals supported by experienced project operators and advisors.

THE WORK ENVIRONMENT

Onward Energy is currently implementing a hybrid office environment, with team members in the office at least two days per week. The position functions in a smoke and vaping free professional office environment. The role routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as laptop computers, phones, and scanner/photocopier.
